Start a family.

One of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life is start a family. There’s a reason that so many people do it. There’s a reason that grandparents talk about their grandkids often and not their former careers. Family is important. Family is special. Of course, you can know that without getting married and having kids but you get to know that in a very different way if you do get married and have kids. I’ve only just started a family and it’s already a lot of fun and I hear that it gets even more fun as your kids get older. It’s also one of the most difficult and tiring things I’ve ever done. Don’t take it lightly if you’re on the fence about having kids but if it’s something that you’re wondering about, I would encourage you to seriously consider it and go for it. I’ve always known that I wanted to have a family so it was an easy decision for me. For me, it goes along with my approach of trying at least a little bit of everything and almost always ordering the appetizer sampler rather than just one type of appetizer. Parenthood was a part of life that I didn’t want to miss out on. I knew what it was like to be a single person and to be someone’s son, grandson, and great grandson, but I didn’t know what it was like to be a father to someone. It’s a whole lot of fun and a whole lot of work and my respect for parents everywhere skyrocketed the minute that I became a father.

I started to think more about safety and security than adventure and fun. I started to think about what I wanted to tell you about life, which is why I started writing this long letter. I empathized with you when I learned that screaming and crying is sometimes just tiredness loudly expressing itself. I empathized with other parents who had long days and tired kids. I fell more deeply in love with your mother when I saw her parenting style. I grew more love and more respect for your four grandparents when I saw their grandparenting style. I have the pleasure of living life every day through your wondrous, expectant, happy little eyes. I woke up one morning to hear you awaken, crawl over towards me to see if I was awake and then, thinking I was asleep, kiss me on the cheek. Never has my day been made so quickly. Starting a family is the easiest way I know to constantly be reminded that the everyday is absolutely magical.
